It was never going to be easy to find the actress who could step into Barbra Streisand’s shoes and star in a new Broadway-bound production of “Funny Girl,” the 1964 musical comedy that propelled Ms. Streisand’s career. But the man searching to fill the role of Fanny Brice — Bartlett Sher, the Tony Award-winning director of “South Pacific” — has newly reckoned with how challenging it will be.

“This is the hardest part I’ve ever had to cast,” said Mr. Sher, who will direct “Funny Girl” at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles, with performances in January and February 2012 before an intended transfer to Broadway.

There’s been talk of that casting possibility, but one of Lea’s co-stars is on the fence about the subject. “Maybe someday,” Glee’s Darren Criss told The Hollywood Reporter when asked if Michele could take on the role that Streisand played in 1968. “Lea has many years ahead of her. She’s very young and has all the time in the world.”
Streisand was 26 years old when she played the lead in the film adaptation of the Broadway production, which she also starred in. She later won the Academy Award for the performance. Michele is 24.

In this week’s PEOPLE Magazine, February 7, 2011 issue, Lea Michele writes “Why I Love Barbra” and says that, “I grew up in this typical New Jersey town where everyone looked the same. If you didn’t have a nose job, you were about to. Agents and casting directors told me to get one, but my mother said, ‘Barbra Streisand never did- and neither are you.’

Glee’s Lea Michele opened up about her red-hot career and her red carpet-ready looks during a Q & A panel at the Winter TCAs (Television Critics Association) meeting Thursday, and RadarOnline.com has all the info for you.

The 24-year-old New Yorker said if she gets “any free time from Glee, [she's] hoping to do films,” noting that Glee creator Ryan Murphy has been wonderful in giving her the freedom to branch out in her entertainment endeavors.
